Budgeting for rent on a monthly salary
A simple way to think about how much rent you can comfortably carry, and how to stay ahead of renewal.

A monthly rent plan only helps if the monthly figure fits your life. Before you apply for anything, it’s worth working out what you can comfortably carry.
Start with what actually arrives
Use your take-home pay — after tax, pension and any deductions — not your gross salary. That’s the money your rent competes with.
List the fixed costs first
Food, transport, power and fuel, data, family support, school fees. Add these up before rent, not after. What’s left is the honest room you have.
Leave a buffer
Prices move. Generators break. Keep some space between your monthly rent and what’s left over, rather than spending the whole gap.
Plan for the next renewal now
The easiest renewal is the one you started saving for twelve months earlier. The rent vault lets you put a little aside each month and lock it until your renewal date.
“Pick the home your monthly budget can carry — not the one your savings can stretch to once.”
